Paul Townsend has been a Consultant Plastic Surgeon since 1979, having obtained his medical degree in 1963. Until his retirement from the NHS in 2005, he was the Senior Consultant Plastic Surgeon at Frenchay Hospital in Bristol.

Nationally, he has been the Regional Specialty Representative of Plastic Surgery for the Royal College of Surgeons, a Council Member of the British Association of Plastic Surgeons and has been on the Editorial Board of the British Journal of Plastic Surgery.

Paul Townsend has a particular interest in skin cancer. He founded and ran the skin cancer clinic at Frenchay Hospital since 1992, is a member of the Melanoma Study Group and is currently Chairman of SCARF (Skin Cancer Research Fund). At BPS, Paul now concentrates his skills on diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer.
